Controversial Standoff: IUT Teacher Declines to Grade ChatGPT's Papers, Ignites Educational Debate!

A teacher at the IUT Charlemagne de Nancy has decided not to correct the papers of her 120 first-year students of BUT (university bachelor of technologies) because of an excessive use of ChatGPT, a powerful artificial intelligence tool that can generate texts on any topic.

The students had to submit a written document on thermalism, as part of the Nancy Thermal project. However, the teacher noticed that the papers did not include any spelling mistakes, or were composed of searched phrases, which aroused her suspicion. She then confronted some of the students, who admitted to using ChatGPT to write their papers.

The teacher, with the agreement of her colleagues and the director of the IUT, Samuel Cruz-Lara, decided not to correct the papers and to sanction the students for plagiarism. "Students will still have a grade in this subject, they will not be penalized," said Cruz-Lara, who added that he did not want to ban access to ChatGPT from the IUT.

Instead, he wants to engage with students in a benefit-danger discussion and to accompany them in the use of ChatGPT. He also plans to modify the rules of procedure of the IUT to include a paragraph on artificial intelligence tools, whose use will be sanctioned in the same way as plagiarism.

The University of Lorraine, of which the IUT Charlemagne is a component, has not yet taken a general decision on the use of artificial intelligence. ChatGPT is a controversial tool that has been used by students, teachers, journalists and even politicians for various purposes. Some praise its creativity and efficiency, while others warn about its ethical and legal implications.¹²
