Survey by Malwarebytes ChatGPT Uncovers 81% of Participants Expressing Concerns about Security Risks Posed by Generative AI

A recent consumer pulse survey conducted by Malwarebytes, a global leader in real-time cyber protection, revealed that 81% of respondents are concerned about the security risks posed by generative AI, such as ChatGPT³. ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot platform that can generate human-like responses in text format on various topics, such as writing code, composing music, summarizing documents, and more¹².
The survey, which polled 1,000 US consumers who have used ChatGPT at least once, found that 62% of respondents are worried about ChatGPT being used to create malware, 59% are worried about ChatGPT spreading misinformation or disinformation, and 57% are worried about ChatGPT impersonating someone they know. Additionally, 44% of respondents said they have encountered content generated by ChatGPT that was inaccurate, misleading, or offensive³.
Malwarebytes CEO Marcin Kleczynski said that while ChatGPT has the potential to democratize AI and provide many benefits for users, it also poses significant challenges for cybersecurity and society at large. He urged users to be cautious and vigilant when interacting with ChatGPT or any other generative AI system².
"ChatGPT is a powerful tool that can be used for good or evil. It can help users with creative problem-solving, research, and entertainment, but it can also be exploited by cybercriminals, hackers, and malicious actors to create malware, spread fake news, and manipulate people. We need to be aware of the risks and limitations of generative AI and not blindly trust everything we see or read online," Kleczynski said².
Malwarebytes recommends users to follow these best practices when using ChatGPT or any other generative AI system:
- Verify the source and credibility of any content generated by ChatGPT or any other generative AI system.
- Use a reliable antivirus software that leverages AI and machine learning to detect and stop emerging threats with unknown signatures.
- Report any suspicious or inappropriate content generated by ChatGPT or any other generative AI system to the platform provider or the authorities.
- Educate yourself and others about the capabilities and limitations of generative AI and how to use it responsibly and ethically¹².
